Sea Service Requirements

NEAR COASTAL

Master

  • 720 days of service on Ocean, Near Coastal or Great Lakes, OF WHICH:
    • Service on Inland waters other than GL MAY be substitutable for up to 360 days of the required service.

Mate

  • 360 days of service on Ocean, Near Coastal waters or Great Lakes, OF WHICH:
    • Service on Inland waters other than GLMAY be substitutable for up to 180 days of the required service.

INLAND

Master

  • 360 total days of service on any waters

Mate

  • 180 days service in the deck department.

GREAT LAKES

Master

360 total days of service, OF WHICH:

  • 90 days of service on Great Lakes, otherwise the endorsement will be limited to inland waters of the United States (excluding the Great Lakes)

Mate

  • 180 days service in the deck department, OF WHICH:
    • 90 days must have been on Great Lakes

SAIL

Master

  • In addition to the required courses, 180 days on sail or auxiliary sail vessels.

Mate

  • In addition to the required course, 180 days on sail or aux sail vessels.

NEAR COASTAL

Master

  • 100 GRT: 180 days of service on vessels of 51 GRT or above OR 360 days of service on vessels over 34 GRT
  • 50 GRT: 1 day of service on vessels over 5 GRT
  • 25 GRT: All service of 5 GRT or less

Mate

  • 100 GRT: 90 days of service on vessels of 51 GRT or above OR 180 days of service on vessels over 34 GRT
  • 50 GRT: 1 day service on vessels over 5 GRT
  • 25 GRT: All service of 5 GRT or less

GREAT LAKES & INLAND

Master

  • 100 GRT: 90 days of service on vessels of 51 GRT or above, OR180 days of service on vessels over 34 GRT
  • 50 GRT: 1 day of service on vessels over 5 GRT
  • 25 GRT: All service is on vessels of 5 GRT or less 

Mate

  • 100 GRT: 45 days of service on vessels of 101 GRT or above OR 90 days of service on vessels over 34 GRT
  • 50 GRT: 1 day service on vessels over 5 GRT
  • 25 GRT: All service is on vessels of 5 GRT or less

Application Requirements

  • Completed USCG Application including sea service documentation
  • USCG Physical Examination
  • USCG Drug Test
  • Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC)

Training Requirements

  • OUPV
  • Upgrade OUPV to Master 100 Ton
  • First Aid & CPR
  • FCC Radio Operator’s Permit self-study
