Get to Know Our Training Vessels

Wondering how you get the real-life, practical experience on-board different types of vessels while taking courses with Northeast Maritime Institute? Well… let us introduce you to NMI’s fleet of training vessels. The Marina at Slocum Cove is the home facility for the Institute’s fleet where both the college program and continuing ed program utilizes the vessels. Check out the breakdown below of each individual vessel:

  1. M/V NAVIGATOR

Navigator is a 65 foot aluminum crewboat that provides a hands on learning platform for shiphandling, navigation, seamanship and marine engineering.

2.  S/V FRITHA

A 74’ traditionally rigged wooden tall ship provides the opportunity for hands on training in navigation, marlin-spike seamanship and the lost art of square rig sailing.

3.  KEHOE LAUNCH

The Kehoe is a 30’ launch boat that provides launch services for the Marina at Slocum Cove and provides introductory boat handling and seamanship practical training for underclassmen.

Captain Jules Kehoe was a beloved instructor at Northeast Maritime Institute and encouraged students and faculty alike to keep improving and growing as mariners and as people.  To “honor the mariner” NMI has a dedicated a Launch in her name.

4. LIFEBOAT TRAINER

A fully installed 30-foot fiberglass lifeboat complete with gravity davits, is used in our USCG Approved Lifeboatman Proficiency in Survival Craft courses. Students complete practical demonstrations of launching, rowing and recovering the lifeboat.
