Basic and Advanced Firefighting

This 40-hour course satisfies the Basic Safety Fire Prevention and Fire Training requirements of section A-VI/1 and Table A-VI/1-2 of the Seafarers’ Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Code and 46 CFR 10.205 (1) (2); and satisfies the Basic and Advance Fire Fighting training requirements of 46 CFR 10.205(g) (1) for a license; and Satisfy the Fire Fighting training requirements of 46 CFR 13.113(d) (2) (i) (A) 13.113(e) (l) (i) (A) or (B) 13.201(e), 13.301(e), 13.401(e) or 13.501(e) for a tankerman endorsement.

This course is designed around three days of theory in the classroom and two days of practical field training. Basic Safety Training (STCW)

Basic Safety Training: STCW 95 compliant

STCW Basic Safety Training is a five day USCG approved program made up of four independent courses. The Firefighting and Survival Techniques courses require physical demonstrations and applicants should meet the minimum physical fitness requirements set by the U.S. Coast Guard for obtaining a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner credential. The basic safety training courses may be taken as one unit or individually. They are as follows:

1. Basic Marine Firefighting: Two days are devoted to this course. One day is spent in the classroom learning the elements of shipboard firefighting. The second day is devoted to practical hands-on training at a firefighting facility.

Course Hours: 16

2. Personal Survival Techniques: This course is a 1-1/2 day program which covers different emergency procedures aboard ship as well as abandoning ship. You will be trained in the use of survival suits and liferafts, as well as other survival gear and exercises. The course makes use of our indoor pool and lecture rooms.

Course Hours: 15

Prerequisites: Willingness to get in pool and demonstrate necessary floating, survival suits and liferaft techniques. Students should be able to swim prior to taking this course. 3. First Aid/CPR: Taught in a one day format, students will gain knowledge and confidence to be an effective first responder in many medical emergencies. Students will learn how to activate the EMS system, provide immediate, temporary care for a victim and learn how to maintain his or her own safety until professional medical staff is available to assume the care.

4. Personal Safety and Social Responsibility: This 4 hour class is conducted in an open-forum setting with the instructor. Trainees and the moderator will discuss modern day issues such as drug and alcohol safety, shipboard safety, communication between management and employees and sexual harassment.

Celestial Navigation – Master 500/1600 GT Near Coastal increase to Oceans

The course satisfies the Navigation & Deck General examination requirements to increase the scope of a license as Master 500/1600 Gross Tons from Near Coastal to Oceans (exam Module 207XX).

The course deals with Ocean Currents & Publications as well as Maritime Law & Regulations. This is accomplished using conventional teaching and training methods, participatory training techniques (such as task solving, both individually and in groups), simulation exercises in the classroom, as well as the most common forms of teaching, e.g. lectures, audio-visual presentations, simulation and practical applications.

Lifeboatman Training & Certification

The 40-hour Lifeboatman training course (Proficiency in Survival Craft) will satisfy the survival craft training requirements of Section A-VI/2 and Table A-VI/2 of the STCW Code and the written and practical examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.10-5 for endorsement as Lifeboatman. The Certificate of completion must be presented within one year of completion of training to a Regional Exam Center for an endorsement as Able Seaman- Offshore Supply Vessel. MEDICAL CARE PROVIDER – a 24 hour program designed to enable the participant to meet the requirements of STCW 95 Ch VI, Section A-VI/4-1 Table A-VI/4-1. Through instructor directed presentations, video programs and practical sessions the program presents topics including Immediate Action to be taken in an Emergency, Body Structure and Function, Toxicological hazards aboard ship, Medical care of rescued persons, Cardiac Arrest, Burns, Fractures and Dislocations, Spinal Injuries and immobilization, Administration of Medications, Maintaining a healthy environment aboard ship and use of Medical Advisory Services.

This course is a prerequisite for Medical Care Person in Charge.

MEDICAL CARE PERSON IN CHARGE – This 42 hour course will provide the participant with the knowledge and skills needed to meet the requirements of STCW 95 CH VI, Sect A-VI/4-2 Table A-VI/4-2. After successfully completing this program the participant will demonstrate competence to provide medical care to the sick and injured while they are on board and to participate in coordinated schemes for medical assistance to ships.

In this program topics introduced in the Provider program are presented in a greater detail with emphasis on decision making. This course also provides training in basic nursing care, infectious and tropical diseases, dental injuries, ENT care, childbirth and women’s health issues, disease prevention, and wound closure. Basic skills in IV and injection of medication are also introduced in this program.

In order to be eligible for this program the participant must have completed a Provider level course within the previous 12 months.
