Captain’s License Course – 100 Gross Tons (near coastal)

This is a US Coast Guard approved Captain’s license course and is designed for mariners who have not previously held a USCG License. This 94-hour Master 100 Gross Tons course satisfies the examination requirements of 46 CFR 10.205(I) for original issuance or 46 CFR 10.209 (c) (iii) for renewal of license as Master or Mate of Steam or Motor Vessels Not More Than 100 Gross tons (except ocean).  This course covers the subjects and practical knowledge to perform as Captain/Master 25, 50, 100 GT, Near Coastal. Covered topics include: license structure, rules of the road, watch-standing, navigation, ship handling, emergency procedures, first aid, firefighting, pollution and National Maritime Law.

Captain’s License Course – Upgrade to 200 Gross Tons Master (near coastal)

This course is designed for mariners who hold a Master 100 Gross Ton License**

This USCG approved captain’s license course teaches students the subjects and practical knowledge to perform as Master 200 gross tons or Mate 200 gross tons, Near Coastal. Subjects covered include: license structure, rules of the road, watch-standing, navigation, shiphandling, emergency procedures, first aid, firefighting, pollution, stability, and National Maritime Law. Final exams in lieu of those given at the USCG are given by NMI at the end of the course.

**If you do not hold a Master 100 GT license, you would need to complete the OUPV Upgrade to Master 100 Gross Ton course in addition to this course

This captain’s license course satisfies the exam requirements of 46 CFR 10.207 for upgrade of a license from Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels to Master 100 Gross Tons, NC.

500/1600 Ton Master/Mate Course

This three week course provides the comprehensive training required to prepare for the exams to upgrade to a Master/Mate 500/1600 Near Coastal. The course deals with the subject matter appearing on the exams given by the U.S. Coast Guard for Master/Mate 500/1600 Ton Near Coastal.

Ideally, those entering the course will have had some experience on sea going vessels, as a Master or Mate, or a very experienced A/B.  This course is not designed for the novice, or an entry level mariner .  NMI has tutored many students during their upgrade exams to Master/Mate 500/1600 ton licenses and we are familiar with the most common learning requirements and trouble areas our students have faced.

Celestial Navigation

U.S. Coast Guard Approved; STCW 95 Compliant

An applicant’s successful completion of the 80-hour Celestial Navigation course (with a passing grade of at least 80%) will satisfy the Celestial Navigation training requirements for certification as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch on vessels of 500 or more gross tonnage (ITC);  or, if presented within one year of the completion of training, the celestial navigation examination requirements of 46 CFR 10.215 (c) and 10.401 (d) for deck license up to Master Not More Than 500/1600 Gross Tons Upon Oceans, including Mate or Master of Offshore Supply Vessels. This is a USCG and STCW 95 approved course.

The course satisfies the Navigation & Deck General examination requirements to increase the scope of a license as Master 500/1600 Gross Tons from Near Coastal to Oceans (exam Module 207XX).

The course deals with Ocean Currents & Publications as well as Maritime Law & Regulations. This is accomplished using conventional teaching and training methods, participatory training techniques (such as task solving, both individually and in groups), simulation exercises in the classroom, as well as the most common forms of teaching, e.g. lectures, audio-visual presentations, simulation and practical applications.

This course provides the knowledge to those who may be designated to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Company Security Officer (CSO), as defined in section A/2.1.6 (and section A/12.1) of the ISPS Code and the requirements set forth in the U.S. Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA), and in particular the duties and responsibilities with respect to the security of a ship, for implementing and maintaining a Ship Security Plan and for liaising with the Ship Security Officer (SSO) and with Port Facility Security Officers (PFSOs).

Crowd Management Course

This 4 week course prepares students to take the Coast Guard examinations for Designated Duty Engineer 1000/4000 Horsepower Course, under the requirements set forth in 46 CFR 10.524. 

 

 

This course provides training at an advanced level for Designated Duty Engineers aboard limited tonnage and near coastal vessels.  The course consists of a specialized training program appropriate to their duties, covering engineering operations, fire safety measures and systems, pollution prevention and control, operational practice and obligations under applicable laws and regulations.

Electronic Navigation

This 40-hour U.S. Coast Guard approved course satisfies the Electronic Navigation training requirements for certification as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch on vessels of 500 or more gross tonnage (ITC). The practical assessments in this course will be accepted as the equivalent of the following assessments from the National Assessment Guidelines for Table A-II/1 of the STCW Code: OICNW-1-4A; OICNW-1-4B; OICNW-l-4C; and OICNW-1-4D. Applicants who have successfully completed this course need not present completed “Control Sheets” for these assessments in application for STCW certification.

First Aid/CPR

U.S. Coast Guard Approved; STCW 95 Compliant

Successfully completing this 8-hour First Aid & CPR course and presenting your Certificate of Training at the regional Exam Center (REC) will satisfy the first Aid & CPR training requirements of 46 CFR 10.205(h)(l)(ii) and 46 CFR 10.205(h)(2)(ii) for original issuance of license and satisfy the Basic Safety– Elementary First Aid training requirements of section A-VI/1 and Table A-VI/1-3 of the Seafarers’ Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Code and 46 CFR 10.205(l)(3).

 

Taught in a one day format, students will gain the knowledge and confidence to be an effective first responder in many medical emergencies. Rescue breathing, CPR, choking, burns, hypothermia, and fractures are some of the subjects covered.

This course is designed for those individuals who may be designated to perform the duties and responsibilities of Facility Security Officer as defined in USCG Regulations and the International Ship and Port Facility Code (ISPS Code). Ship security officers, company security officers, port facility security officers will require training to properly and effectively implement the Code. Training is equally important for Contracting Government or Recognized Security Organization surveyors charged with duties relating to important of the Code.

Following the ISPS Code, the United States promulgated a set of regulations further defining the US implementation of new maritime security standards, MTSA (Maritime Transportation Security Act). The United States went far beyond the international requirements and applied new security measures to domestic vessels as well. While the ISPS Code and USCG regulations have similarities, Facility Security Officers will have to be knowledgeable in both since arriving ships will be most familiar with the international standards.

Lifeboatman Training & Certification

The 40-hour Lifeboatman training course (Proficiency in Survival Craft) will satisfy the survival craft training requirements of Section A-VI/2 and Table A-VI/2 of the STCW Code and the written and practical examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.10-5 for endorsement as Lifeboatman. The Certificate of completion must be presented within one year of completion of training to a Regional Exam Center for an endorsement as Able Seaman- Offshore Supply Vessel.  This course covers lifeboats, davits, safety procedures, and life rafts.  The class is in lieu of the Coast Guard exam and incorporates training on our scale model and full-size lifeboat with “in the water” training. The Lifeboatman training course is U.S. Coast Guard Approved and STCW 95 Compliant.
