We offer USCG Approved Captain’s license courses for all level licenses up to 200 Gross Tons (OUPV/ Charterboat license, 100 gross tons Master and 200 gross tons Master license). The courses are offered as both daytime and evening programs, so you can choose which best fits your schedule. Below is a table explaining each license to help you determine which program you should take. This is a US Coast Guard approved Captain’s license course and is designed for mariners who have not previously held a USCG License. This 94-hour Master 100 Gross Tons course satisfies the examination requirements of 46 CFR 10.205(I) for original issuance or 46 CFR 10.209 (c) (iii) for renewal of license as Master or Mate of Steam or Motor Vessels Not More Than 100 Gross tons (except ocean). This course covers the subjects and practical knowledge to perform as Captain/Master 25, 50, 100 GT, Near Coastal. Covered topics include: license structure, rules of the road, watch-standing, navigation, ship handling, emergency procedures, first aid, firefighting, pollution and National Maritime Law.

This USCG approved captain’s license course teaches students the subjects and practical knowledge to perform as Master 200 gross tons or Mate 200 gross tons, Near Coastal. Subjects covered include: license structure, rules of the road, watch-standing, navigation, shiphandling, emergency procedures, first aid, firefighting, pollution, stability, and National Maritime Law. Final exams in lieu of those given at the USCG are given by NMI at the end of the course.

This three week course provides the comprehensive training required to prepare for the exams to upgrade to a Master/Mate 500/1600 Near Coastal. The course deals with the subject matter appearing on the exams given by the U.S. Coast Guard for Master/Mate 500/1600 Ton Near Coastal.

Ideally, those entering the course will have had some experience on sea going vessels, as a Master or Mate, or a very experienced A/B. This course is not designed for the novice, or an entry level mariner . NMI has tutored many students during their upgrade exams to Master/Mate 500/1600 ton licenses and we are familiar with the most common learning requirements and trouble areas our students have faced.

Mate (Pilot) Training Program

This program in-lieu of sea-time takes candidates to the point of obtaining a USCG license as Mate (Pilot) of Towing Vessels through an intensive sequence of formal, Coast Guard-approved courses, simulator training, and on-board experience, training, and evaluation in a cooperative program. The program length is 453 days (15 months), including “off time”. The approved program is in accordance with 46 CFR §10.304.

The course will satisfy the recent service requirements as it has been carefully balanced with “At Sea Training Periods” where normal duties are clearly carried out, demonstrated, assessed and validated as noted in 46 CFR § 10.304 (b). Simulator time within the program constitutes 38% of the required sea service equivalency meeting the requirements of 46 CFR § 10.304 (d). Requirements for 46 CFR § 10.304 (g) and (h) are met by using an upgraded USCG Towing Officer Assessment Record as a base document.

Any applicant who has successfully completed the Mate (Pilot) Training Program will receive 270 days of sea service credit that may be used to qualify for a license as Mate (Pilot) of Towing Vessels Inland and/or Western Rivers. Service acquired during the “at-sea” periods of this program may be used in addition to this sea service award to qualify for the Mate (Pilot) license will be credited at 1:5 to 1. The “at-sea” service should be documented with a normal service letter from the vessel operator. Applicants must obtain at least 90 days of service on each route for which they will be licensed, and they must present a completed Towing Officer Assessment Record (TOAR) for each route.

This 16 hour course introduces the student to Z-Drive propulsion systems and basic tug handling techniques. This course involves some classroom time, however, a majority of the time is spent on our tug simulator. Students will operate both Azimuth Stern Drive and Tractor Z-Drive tugs. Z–Drive propulsion theory and practical application, hand eye coordination, docking/undocking, ship approach & ship work, stability & hawser work are just some of the subject areas covered in this course.
