Basic Safety Training: STCW 95 compliant
STCW Basic Safety Training is a five day USCG approved program made up of four independent courses. The Firefighting and Survival Techniques courses require physical demonstrations and applicants should meet the minimum physical fitness requirements set by the U.S. Coast Guard for obtaining a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner credential. The basic safety training courses may be taken as one unit or individually. They are as follows:
1. Basic Marine Firefighting: Two days are devoted to this course. One day is spent in the classroom learning the elements of shipboard firefighting. The second day is devoted to practical hands-on training at a firefighting facility.

2. Personal Survival Techniques: This course is a 1-1/2 day program which covers different emergency procedures aboard ship as well as abandoning ship. You will be trained in the use of survival suits and liferafts, as well as other survival gear and exercises. The course makes use of our indoor pool and lecture rooms.

Prerequisites: Willingness to get in pool and demonstrate necessary floating, survival suits and liferaft techniques. Students should be able to swim prior to taking this course. 3. First Aid/CPR: Taught in a one day format, students will gain knowledge and confidence to be an effective first responder in many medical emergencies. Students will learn how to activate the EMS system, provide immediate, temporary care for a victim and learn how to maintain his or her own safety until professional medical staff is available to assume the care.

4. Personal Safety and Social Responsibility: This 4 hour class is conducted in an open-forum setting with the instructor. Trainees and the moderator will discuss modern day issues such as drug and alcohol safety, shipboard safety, communication between management and employees and sexual harassment.
