(more…)Northeast Maritime Institute and Professional Mariner are proud to announce the first annual International Shiphandling Championship to be held in Fairhaven, MA on June 5-7th, 2009. The contest is open to the first 50 licensed professional mariners who send applications to NMI. These qualified mariners will compete for a total purse of $50,000. First place will be $30,000, second place $15,000 and third place $5,000. Contestants will be scored by a panel of judges and the TRANSAS Evaluations and Assessment System. This USCG approved course satisfies the training requirements of 46 CFR 13.209, 13.309, 13.409 or 13.509 for any dangerous liquids tankerman endorsement. It is our objective at the Northeast Maritime Institute to not only cover the basic principles and procedures in handling dangerous liquids, but to relate years of practical ship board experiences to our course lectures. The following topics are just a few of those that will be covered in this program: Hazards associated with the handling of petroleum, tank vessel safety, pollution prevention, tank vessel design and equipment, vapor recovery systems, cargo surveying and calculations, load and discharge planning, transfer operational procedures, inert gas systems (IGS), and Tank washing (COW) operations. We will also utilize company specific paperwork, pipeline schematics, and any other pertinent information to assist in creating a training experience that relates to the particulars of customers equipment and policies.

This three week course provides the comprehensive training required to prepare for the exams to upgrade to a Master/Mate 500/1600 Near Coastal. The course deals with the subject matter appearing on the exams given by the U.S. Coast Guard for Master/Mate 500/1600 Ton Near Coastal.

Ideally, those entering the course will have had some experience on sea going vessels, as a Master or Mate, or a very experienced A/B. This course is not designed for the novice, or an entry level mariner . NMI has tutored many students during their upgrade exams to Master/Mate 500/1600 ton licenses and we are familiar with the most common learning requirements and trouble areas our students have faced.

The course satisfies the Navigation & Deck General examination requirements to increase the scope of a license as Master 500/1600 Gross Tons from Near Coastal to Oceans (exam Module 207XX).

The course deals with Ocean Currents & Publications as well as Maritime Law & Regulations. This is accomplished using conventional teaching and training methods, participatory training techniques (such as task solving, both individually and in groups), simulation exercises in the classroom, as well as the most common forms of teaching, e.g. lectures, audio-visual presentations, simulation and practical applications.
