Captain Robert Glover

A graduate of Maine Maritime Academy, Captain Robert C. Glover, III holds a Master of Steam, Motor or Auxiliary Sail Vessels of Not More Than 1600 Gross Tons, Master of Towing Vessels upon Oceans & Western Rivers, Third Mate of Steam or Motor Vessels of Any Gross Tons Upon Oceans, Radar Observer unlimited and a Commonwealth of Dominica STCW Certificate for Competency as a Master Rating, 3000GT (ITC). Bob instructs at our Fairhaven facility and serves internationally as an instructor & assessor for Dominica. Additionally he serves as the lead simulator instructor and exercise creator. Sailing since 1973 aboard Ocean & Harbor Tugs, Salvage Tugs and Tall Ships, Bob has been featured in several publications including: On Tugboats, WoodenBoatMaritime Life and Traditions, and Ocean Navigator.

Captain Jeffrey Sylvia

Captain Jeffrey Sylvia brings many years of experience and teaching to Northeast Maritime Institute. Jeff worked with the United States Navy as a Quarter Master for 22 years, since the age of 17. As a member of the Merchant Marines since 1992, Jeff holds a background in deep sea and research vessels. He also holds a second mate unlimited license, 1600 ton master and a 5000 ton uninspected fishing industry vessel. Captain Jeff teaches all levels at NMI and is particularly skilled in working with potential Ableseamen and Lifeboatmen. He also teaches Celestial Navigation and tutors those who seel 500 / 1600 Masters licensing.

Captain Keith Paquin

Captain Keith Paquin has over 19 years of experience in maritime operations. Retired from the Navy, he brings communication, mentoring, and instructional skills from his experiences to Northeast Maritime Institute. Keith serves as NMI’s Director of the Nautical Science Department. He utilizes his past experience in developing procedures and training programs to meet maritime domestic and international guidelines. Captain Keith is approved to teach many Upper Level & STCW Compliant courses.

Captain David Medeiros

Captain Dave Medeiros retired from the Fairhaven Public Schools before joining the NMI crew as a part time instructor and tutor.

An avid fisherman and charter captain and guide, he holds OUPV, 50 ton, and Tow Assist licensing with RADAR endorsement and is approved to teach the Launch Operator, OUPV, and 100 ton Upgrade course in addition to First Aid and CPR at NMI.

Captain Dave assists the full time staff in a number of ways and helps mariners with their TWIC registration and study skills.

Captain George Barlow

As a Master Unlimited, Captain Barlow comes to Northeast Maritime Institute with extensive experience within the industry.Captain George spent his career as a Cheif Mate aboard a large quanitiy of ships. He joined the NMI staff as a part-time instructor. His responsiblities include instructing NMI’s Tankerman, RADRA, ARPA. ECDIS, and RADAR recertification courses and he assists frequently in teaching simulation based courses.




Earl Faunce

Earl Faunce is a 25 year veteran of the Fairhaven Fire Department from which he has retired. He is reponsible for NMI’s Basic Marine Firefighting, Basic & Advanced Marine Firefighting, First Aid/CPR and assists in coordinating other important safety programs offered by the Institute.



Captain Thomas Manley

Captain Thomas Manley is retired from the Massachusetts Steamship Authority. He holds an Unlimited Masters license and is a certified pilot for the Steamship Authority. Captain Tom is the primary instructor for Off-Site program, focusing on delivering the NMI courses to students in the Caribbean area mainly Master’s courses and RADAR Observer.




Captain Richardo “Ricky” Valles

Captain Rick Valles holds a 1600 license with freight/tow, RADAR, tankerman, and ARPA endorsements. He has served as Master or Mate on numerous tugs, crew, and cargo vessels. He has expertise in large boat handling and ship docking and extensive knowledge of eastern seaboard routes and ports. He has served on self propelled tankers loading and discharging cargos and has worked on various dredging operations. Captain Valles captained the Seabulk Minnesota making over 300 trips carrying freight between the local ports of New Bedford and Martha’s Vineyard. A Massachusetts Maritime Academy graduate, Captain Valles brings an excellent reputation and wealth of experience to Northeast Maritime Institute. Captain Rick instructs many off NMI’s STCW Compliant courses.




Captain Casey Allen

Captain Casey Allen is a very experienced waterman who holds a 50 ton Near Coastal license with Tow endorsement. Captain Casey serves as a captain for the local TowBoat US franchise and has captained the Coalition for Buzzard’s Bay vessel “Bay Keeper” and various local charter fishing vessels. He has served on commercial lobster boats and is an avid rod and reel saltwater fisherman. Captain Casey is approved to teach OUPV, 100 ton upgrade, and Assistance Tow courses.



Captain Bradford “Brad” Bowen

Captain Brad Bowen has been Captain and Chief Engineer of Bowen Fisheries, captaining various vessel over the past 20 + years. Brad has been involved in the tuna, lobster, crab, and gillnet/long line fishery. Captain Brad holds a Master 200 ton license with Able Seaman, Lifeboatman, RADAR, and STCW endorsements. Brad is approved to teach the Captain & STCW Compliant Courses . Additionally Captain Brad is a USCG approved Safety Drill Conductor, and serves the Dominica Registry as a vessel inspector and engineering assessor.




Captain Jeffrey Fryar

Captain Jeff Fryar holds a 100 ton Near Coastal license with endorsements in Assistance Towing and Auxiliary Sail. He operates power and sailing passenger vessels on Cape Cod and serves as an instructor for boaters in docking, anchoring, and the safe operation of their vessels. Previously Captain Jeff worked for West Marine and captained the “Knotty Kat”, fire tug “Tillie”, and the tour vessel “Liberty” on the waters surrounding Cape Cod, MA. Captain Jeff instructs the OUPV, 100 ton, Assistance Tow and Auxiliary Sail course.
